Touching Liberation

Thich Nhat Hanh, Photo: wkuplondon.org.

Insight can’t be found in sutras, commentaries, verbal expression, or —isms. Liberation and awakened understanding can’t be found by devoting ourselves to the study of the Buddhist scriptures. This is like trying to find fresh water in dry bones. Returning to the present moment, using our clear mind which exists right here and now, we can be in touch with liberation and enlightenment, as well as with the Buddha and the patriarchs as living realities right in this moment.

Cultivating Relaxed Awareness...

When the thinking mind takes a break for even a few seconds, a kind of relaxed awareness replaces the usual stream of thoughts. We need to encourage this and not fill this space with anything else; just let it be.

Only the Present Moment...

Every moment in life is absolute in itself. That's all there is. There is nothing other than this present moment; there is no past, there is no future; there is nothing but this. So when we don't pay attention to each little this, we miss the whole thing.

Inspiration from Thay...

Thich Nhat Hanh, Photo: thebuddhistblog.blogspot.co.uk.

“If we take one thing to be the truth and cling to it, even if truth itself comes in person

and knocks at our door, we won’t open it.  For things to reveal themselves to us,

we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.”

Hokusai says

Katsushika Hokusa, Hokusai 5/100One hundred poems.

Hi Everybody!

The Following was sent by Graeme:

This poem by Roger Keyes was quoted in the book Mindfulness: finding peace in a frantic world by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. It was inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai (as the title suggests!) and speaks about looking deeply, interbeing, old age, acceptance ... life!

Hokusai says

Hokusai says
look carefully.

He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing.

He says look forward to getting old.
He says keep changing,
you just get more who you really are.
He says get stuck, accept it, repeat yourself
as long as it’s interesting.

He says keep doing what you love.

He says keep praying.

He says every one of us is a child,
every one of us is ancient,
every one of us has a body.
He says every one of us is frightened.
He says every one of us has to findA way to live with Fear.

He says everything is alive -
shells, buildings, people, fish, mountains, trees.
Wood is alive.
Water is alive.
Everything has its own life.
Everything lives inside us.
He says live with the world inside you.

He says it doesn't matter if you draw, or write books.
It doesn't matter if you saw wood, or catch fish.
It doesn't matter if you sit at home
and stare at the ants on your verandah or the shadows of the trees
and grasses in your garden.

It matters that you care.

It matters that you feel.

It matters that you notice.

It matters that life lives through you.
Contentment is life living through you.
Joy is life living through you
Satisfaction and strength
are life living through you.
Peace is life living through you.

He says don’t be afraid.

Don’t be afraid.

Look, feel, let life take you by the hand.

Let life live through you.

Thanks Graeme!!!

Meditation vs Zazen with Brad Warner

About us...

We follow the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh in the Redditch and Alcester area and meet at
Cookhill Village Hall (next to the church on the A441 between Alcester and Astwood Bank)
for half-days of mindfulness usually on the third Sunday of every month (please check with
us for dates and times before arriving). The meetings are traditional Community of Interbeing
mornings which incorporate guided meditations, slow walking meditation and reading from
one of Thich Nhat Hanh’s books (or similar) with time for discussion over a nice cup of tea!
Anyone is welcome and particularly those with an interest in applying Buddhist teachings to
life in the here and now. There are plenty of chairs if you do not have a meditation cushion. If
you can only make part of a meeting we would still love to see you! So please come along
whenever you can and share in our peace and quietude. If you have any questions please
feel free to get in touch.
